Beautifully written. I didn't mind the short chapters, jumping back and forth between the main characters and timeframes.
It didn't end how I expected, and there is a death that is shocking in its brevity, but I guess life is like that. ...more

Shelves: kindle, 2014, 2015, dolly-reading-challenge-2015

Wow. This was not an easy read. In fact, at times it was down right difficult. The subject matter was intense. The prose was at times a little wordy. It took me longer to finish than it normally takes me to read a book and that always starts to frustrate me. But in the end, I'm glad I read it. It stretched me. It was beautiful. I can definitely see why it took the author 10 years to write!

This is easily the best book I've read in quite a while. I've been sort of in the doldrums for some time and I needed something to really grab me. Been starting books and quickly losing interest. Or reading 200 pages of a book and then wondering what it was even about and why was I reading it? This one had me from the first word. Set before and during World War II. Terrific World War II novel which follows several people involved in different aspects of the conflict, and the unlikely ways in which their lives intersect. a little slow in some parts but the main characters are quite compelling and keep you wanting more.

I loved this book! Well written and beautiful characters who I wish I could have read about forever. Loved Werner and Marie and wished so much that Werner could have lived on though I suppose he did in his sisters and maries hearts.

I loved this book! I could not put it down. The story weaves through the lives of so many characters. I also love that it had the aspect of a young German recruit during WW2. I have honestly never thought about that point of view before. This is a great read and I am sad it is over.
