Beautifully written. I didn't mind the short chapters, jumping back and forth between the main characters and timeframes.

Wow. This was not an easy read. In fact, at times it was down right difficult. The subject matter was intense. The prose was at times a little wordy. It took me longer to finish than it normally takes me to read a book and that always starts to frustrate me. But in the end, I'm glad I read it. It stretched me. It was beautiful. I can definitely see why it took the author 10 years to write!

This is easily the best book I've read in quite a while. I've been sort of in the doldrums for some time and I needed something to really grab me. Been starting books and quickly losing interest. Or reading 200 pages of a book and then wondering what it was even about and why was I reading it? This one had me from the first word. Set before and during World War II.
