Set in pre-Civil War, during the war and the reconstruction period after, this book tells the story of the experiences of a rich plantation owner's selfish, spoiled daughter, Scarlett O'Hara, who ends up trying to maintain and save her beloved plantation Tara during the war but finds herself poor after the devastating war ends. It's a very long book (1000 pages or so) but a compelling read - ultimately this is a fascinating love story - told from the point of view of women left behind during the ...more

Week 15 - a book set in the past (more than 100 years ago)

I'm so happy to have finally read this, but I am left with mixed feelings. I really enjoyed the storyline, but at times I couldn't stand the writing. She seemed to repeat herself frequently, especially in Scarlet's thoughts. Scarlet as a character also bothered me throughout the book, even though I realize that there wouldn't be a story if she wasn't written in that way. And then of course, there's the ending.
