A very well-written novel. Mitchell is masterful at character development and deepens characters with unexpected reactions as her larger-than-life plot unfolds.

I would have given more stars, but the novel is littered with blatent racial descrimination, which was distracting for me as a 21st Century reader. I understand that the book was written at a different time, and probably offers valuable insight into the thought process of white Southerners living through the Civil War and Reconstruction.
