Look, I finally go around to at least rating this! I have a deep seated love-hate relationship with this book.
I love the writing. Margaret Mitchell writes some of the most beautiful and descriptive prose I have read. The characters came to life before my eyes and I found myself caught up in a whirlwind that was Georgia during and after the Civil War. And Rhys, oh Rhys...

A very well-written novel. Mitchell is masterful at character development and deepens characters with unexpected reactions as her larger-than-life plot unfolds.
I would have given more stars, but the novel is littered with blatent racial descrimination, which was distracting for me as a 21st Century reader. I understand that the book was written at a different time, and probably offers valuable insight into the thought process of white Southerners living through the Civil War and Reconstruction. ...more
