The inner dialogue. The personal justification. The societal and historical macro justification. The poor, women, and children trapped by circumstance and desperation. The evil genius detective/psychologist. The young innocent victim who can only be redeemed so far. All these are handled with satisfying complexity.

Got about 3/4 of the way through this in 2014. Couldn't finish. Too many other books out there to read that are actually enjoyable!
