I do have a lot of books on my bedside table just now. Not literally in this case. I borrowed a copy from the much smaller but quite high quality lending library at El Jicaro Lodge on Lake Nicaragua. Read half of it in the four days I was there and now have requested a copy from the local library so I can finish it. Also in the YA category. It is really good.

Having Death as the narrator was genius. The fact that Death has such dry humor and shows such fascination of the human nature just makes it all even better.

That being said, the story itself is very heavy reading. All books from the world wars are like that, especially the second world war I tend to think. A heartbreaking story of the tyranny of Nazi Germany, told from the perspective of one of the main characters in that saga, Death himself. Definitely worth the emotional cost.
