What Members Thought

I do have a lot of books on my bedside table just now. Not literally in this case. I borrowed a copy from the much smaller but quite high quality lending library at El Jicaro Lodge on Lake Nicaragua. Read half of it in the four days I was there and now have requested a copy from the local library so I can finish it. Also in the YA category. It is really good.
And I did just finish it. The first book I read on my new Kindle device which I bought on Black Friday. Which goes totally against my "I wi ...more

Having Death as the narrator was genius. The fact that Death has such dry humor and shows such fascination of the human nature just makes it all even better.
That being said, the story itself is very heavy reading. All books from the world wars are like that, especially the second world war I tend to think. This time we get the story of a little German girl in a small town - she's from a poor neighborhood and all they really care about (at least, most of them) is trying to survive. I think this book was really well written. The perspective and the narrator was unique. I feel like have read enough books on the topic of the Holocaust (it is just so heartbreaking and takes so long to rebound from) - so when this book was given to me I hesitated. I just didn't want to read one more. This one was worth going back and visiting the topic again. I don't think this is a young adult read. The perspective would have been too complex and if you don't have a good understanding of the H

This is my new favorite book. Unlike some other reviewers, I thought it was a wonderfully quick read. The characters were very well developed... I had favorites, but I could even feel something for the villains.
This book does leave me with unanswered questions at the end... but that somehow makes me want to read it again.
It's WWII, Nazi Germany.
Death is the narrator, but certainly not what I would have expected.
Leisel is a girl who keeps surviving despite the odds against her.
Her foster parents ...more

This was beautiful and terrible at the same time. It made me laugh and cry. I loved it and I can't wait to read it again. If you have any interest at all in humanity, or lack there of, read this book. You won't regret it.

A moving story about a young nine year old German girl who goes to leave with foster parents during WWII. The narrator is death, which gives the story a very different point of view.

So sad, so beautiful. I feel myself being frustrated with the ending, but I think it was on purpose. Somehow I'm okay with it.
