I had never read this book or seen a film adaptation (if I have, I’ve forgotten), but like most people, I know of its references (like X marks the spot, treasure maps, peg-legged pirates, etc.). Audible Studios came out with a dramatized version of it with some somewhat known actors so I decided to check it out (new in 2017).

It's hard for me to say but I feel like hearing this dramatized version would have been much better with knowing the full story first – especially through reading i 2.5 stars

It's hard for me to say but I feel like hearing this dramatized version would have been much better with knowing the full story first – especially through reading it, I would think. I feel like much is being left out with the dramatization and I’m often lost in wondering what is going on. The main boy, Jim Hawkins, somewhat acts as an overall narrator but there is much room for improvement with having more narration, I think. I would like to know where there are certain gaps, especially new “parts” of the book.

I’m a little sad that this didn’t turn out as awesome as I would have hoped. I’m going to have to read through the Wikipedia synopsis to fully understand what happened in this book.

Audiobook narrator(s) rating: 2.5 stars
The narrators are good and tell the story well. There are even sound effects. But, Audible has a limit on how loud you can make something and it left me with my ears hurting badly with trying to jam my headphones as close as I can to my head in order to hear much of it. So, if I were to rate the performance, it would take a negative hit due to the sound editing not being even. Plus, the narrators do not speak at the same speed – this makes it difficult as well.

UPDATE: I attempted to have my nine-year-old son listen to this book since he really likes dramatizations, sounds effects, full cast, etc. I thought he would like the pirate story as well. I also wondered if it were more for a younger-person’s tastes than an older person, plus he is easy to please. Well, he didn’t get very far, didn’t like it and went to another audiobook in his library… What’s the deal? I am curious to see more reviews/thoughts on this dramatization and wonder if it is just us who do not really like it… ...more
