Tom and Isabel Shelbourne live on Janus Rock, where Tom is working as a lighthouse keeper. Their story begins when Tom finds a boat washed upon the shore with a dead man and a baby girl. After two miscarriages and a recent stillborn birth, Isabel sees this baby as a gift from God. She convinces her husband not to write about it on the log book for the lighthouse and not to contact authorities and to carry on as if this is the baby they lost.
