The 100 (The 100, #1) in The Reader's Lounge

An interesting concept that drew me to the book. I found that this book had a lot of teenage angst. Now don’t get me wrong, I expect that from this book, but at times this book kind of flat and at times I wondered where the story was going.

Now one reason why I felt that this book fell flat for me or went nowhere for me, was that there were a lot of characters and that some of them seemed stronger and others seemed weaker. Also some of them are really damaged from being in confinement for so long An interesting concept that drew me to the book. I found that this book had a lot of teenage angst. Now don’t get me wrong, I expect that from this book, but at times this book kind of flat and at times I wondered where the story was going.

Now one reason why I felt that this book fell flat for me or went nowhere for me, was that there were a lot of characters and that some of them seemed stronger and others seemed weaker. Also some of them are really damaged from being in confinement for so long, aka prison. These 100 delinquents really need each other, but find that they all have come to Earth for very different crimes they have committed, but certain individuals do not get along at all. This causes problems within the group dynamic. With a group of 100 teenagers, this is bound to cause issues and how they get along with each other is going to be difficult.

Now the fact that there are a lot of characters also in some ways takes me on many different roads and journeys. I found it some what distracting because here I am on one character or two characters and find myself starting to get to know them and then the next chapter it’s someone’s else’s story. I felt like this took me away from certain characters that I felt invested in.

Also Glass and Luke’s story is interesting as they are on the spaceship and didn’t go down to earth. I think that there are some very deep wounds cause by both of these characters. Glass found herself in a situation that is a crime, an unauthorized pregnancy and yet Luke didn’t know about things. Plus things are happening on the spaceship that are dangerous. The Spaceship is dying, so the group on Earth is on their own literally. Glass finds out that they are cutting off air on certain parts of the ARC’s because the spaceship doesn’t have enough Air to support everyone anymore. This is quite horrifying to me, but I think Glass and Luke have something really special and are willing to die together, but Glass has many secrets that she hasn’t told Luke about.

Another thing that I didn’t like was that Clarke seems to be very hard on Wells. Wells did what he had to do or at least thought he did. Clarke blames him for so many things that have gone wrong. I find it very hard to believe that Clarke could even entertain the idea, but her friend Thalia convinces Clarke that she should give him the chance. The flashbacks to Clarke and Wells past really was good, as it gave a lot of the back story, but I felt that Wells betrayal and Clarke’s anger destroyed what they could have had on Earth.

Clarke is a very strong character, but sometimes she’s too hard. She is trying to keep everyone healthy and also tries to warn people that Earth may be very dangerous to everyone, but no one listens to her. Also Clarke’s relationships are hard on her, because she feels very deeply but doesn’t show it to anyone. Clarke wants to be happy, but she feels so alone on Earth.

Overall, an okay book, but I’m willing to see where Book 2 goes.
