Evan Smoak is on his way to the hospital to check on Mia when he is captured by Agent Naomi Templeton and her Government Agents. President Victoria Donahue-Carr gives him an ultimatum. She will let him live if he eliminates a very powerful man who has some senators in his pocket. This kind of work is against everything that Evan stands for. He decides it won't hurt to look into Lobbyist Luke Devine, the intended target, to see if a hit is justified.

This book grabbed me at the first page. There is a bit of flashback that really fills in more of Evan Smoak's transition to Orphan X in these clearly discerned chapters.
The bulk of the story kept me on the edge of my seat, until I had to finish it before I went to bed. A very late night, but I could not put this book down until I read the last word.
I'm hoping that there will be a volume 9 to this series.

I love this series. There is a lot of action throughout from Evan getting captured by the feds to the getting justice as the nowhere man. I enjoyed seeing Candy again. I love when Joey and Dog are around. She makes Evan squirm sometimes, but he always learns something from her. There are several times when we see Orphan X vulnerable. He is afraid when he was captured. We don't see him afraid often.

I have said that the Orphan X series is my guilty pleasure. It is full of adventure, violence yet with a moral bent to it. In this eighth installment, Gregg Hurwitz continues to bring us non-stop action, twists and unfortunately, some morally reprehensible characters. If you aren't familiar with this series, the protagonist is Evan Smoak, who was plucked from an orphanage when he was just twelve. He was trained by the US government to become an assassin. He learned all manner of fighting techniq
