Meanwhile, Lucy’s husband Sean Rogan is enjoying some precious time with his thirteen-year old son Jesse whose mother has agreed to let him spend six weeks in San Antonio. However, things get complicated after two threats that appear to be targeted towards Jesse.

The McMahon case pointed to something fishy going on with his research and his employer. Lucy and the primary investigator did a great job following the clues and not being consumed by supposition. I liked how they doggedly tracked the evidence to resolve the questions surrounding McMahon’s ill-fated decisions at that coffee shop. Some of the revelations were a surprise but for the most part, I was able to deduce most of the answers.

Even though the case was interesting, I was most absorbed by the threats against Jesse and his developing relationship with Sean. Even though their love for each other is obvious, they are both trying to figure out how to relate to each other. His mother Maddie and stepfather Carson added even more conflict to the mix and I liked how Lucy used her skills to support Sean, Jessie and even Maddie, keeping things from irrevocably combusting. The final resolution shouldn’t have been surprising but elements of it were unexpected. I’m still loving this on audio as the narrator has become the voice in my ear for not only Lucy but for the storytelling. I enjoyed everything about this one, even those moments that gave me heartburn.

I have been reading this series as a group read, one book per month with the Max Revere Series thrown in too. I love this series; it just keeps getting better and better and I enjoy each book more and more. Seeing Sean and Lucy grow in their relationship and become a strong united team is wonderful and rare in a mystery series. Here we see Sean struggle with a threat to his son, Jesse, and Lucy, even while embroiled in an FBI case, is his strength and rock.

People have been taken hostage by a gunman in a local diner. FBI Special Agent Lucy Kincaid is assigned to help the hostage negotiator. When the gunman dies in a shootout, it looks like the case can be closed. But Lucy has questions. Why did Charlie McMahon, a respected scientist, suddenly crack? Why did he get fired from his job? I don’t know about you, but when a book starts off with a hostage situation I know it’s bound to be a good book. Lucy has just finished her Hostage Rescue training and is immediately thrown into one. I think it was good for her to see her experienced coworker have a bad outcome. They don’t always end as you would hope.
The case itself is quite interesting. There were many possibilities and the facts didn’t quite add up at times. I was as eager as Lucy was to figure out what was going on with the ...more

This was not my favorite in the series.

Although I was glad to get more of Sean's family drama, Lucy's investigational results seemed tacked on at the end. The two things did not balance. Maybe this was the author's portrayal of life...? ...more
