The man known only as The Rook has a past that he can’t remember beyond the moment he was rescued by Lorelai Weatherstroke and her family. He was found badly beaten and damaged near a roadside Ash tree and Lorelai willed him to live through her loving care and sweetness. As he recovered, she gave him the name Ash, which he embraced at the time. When the cruel machinations of her brother separated them for almost twenty years, he abandoned the name and became known as The Rook, a brutal pirate cl ...more

The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo
4.5 Stars

The latest installment in the Victorian Rebels series is just one incredible revelation after another and it keeps the reader guessing from start to finish.

This review will be short so as to avoid spoiling any of the surprises interspersed throughout. Suffice it to say that the romance between the pirate known only as the Rook and the shy and sheltered Lorelai is intense and emotional. The love these two share is awe-inspiring.

Beaten and thrown into a mass grave, a man with no memory of his past is rescued by Lorelai Weatherstoke and nursed back to health. She names him Ash and he begins to care for her during his long recovery. Since Lorelai's cruel brother doesn't want Ash around, he pays to have him thrown onto a ship headed for Shanghai. After years of servitude on the ship, Ash becomes a ruthless pirate known as The Rook. His one mission in life is to acquire Lorelai as his own...and no one is going to stop him. ...more

It took me a while to get into this one. The first half just wasn't doing it for me. I'd give it a 3-Star rating. The pace and action picked up substantially in the second half. I'd give that a 5-Star. Some plot twists that were a surprise and some that you saw coming miles away. The tortured, broken hero and damsel in distress is a constant theme in these books and sometimes the angst lever is off the charts, but this is a really great series and this book answered so many questions that I've h ...more

Just a quick review for now....
I don't know why I waited so long to read this book. I loved it and can't wait to pick up another book by this author. Ash, the tortured hero is now one of my favorites. He's damaged by years of abuse and servitude and then by current circumstances where he reinvented himself as the most feared, ruthless, and heartless pirate to sail the seas. Lorelei is his other half, his light and his peace, perfectly complimenting his darkness. She could also be considered a to

I seem to be the odd one out with this book: it's my least favorite of this series. The hero is too
angry, too angsty and too violent for my taste. I did not find his return for the heroine to be
a convincing sequence of events. His treatment of her was too rough, and it was difficult to believe that his return for her was his motive for living the past twenty years. This is enough of a spoiler for me to say more.

I hope the author gets back on track with the next book. Her writing is usually spell

4 stars. This book surprised me with a bit more violent vengeance than I was expecting. It was written well and kept me intrigued. I haven't read this author before and this is book 6 of a series. I didn't have any problems following along and didn't feel as though I was missing anything, so this book can be read as a standalone.

Ash was definitely a tortured hero, and Lorelai was his saviour. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it.
