Sarah Brandt receives a strange request from her mother, Elizabeth Brandt. She wants Sarah to accompany her to a seance led by a spiritualist who was being vouched for by a friend. Flabbergasted, Sarah agrees but is alarmed at some of the things that happened during the session and makes her mother promise not to attend anymore. Well, that didn’t work and the next session ends when one of the attendees ends up murdered.

Murder on Waverly Place
3 Stars
When Sarah's mother, Elizabeth Decker, becomes involved with a psychic medium and finds herself at the scene of a murder, she immediately calls on Detective Frank Malloy for assistance. But how will Sarah and Malloy uncover the killer when all of the suspects at the seance were holding hands?
Unfortunately, this is one of the weakest installments in the series. It took longer to get into the story as the mystery isn't all that interesting and the characters are very ...more

A "closed room" murder mystery; how did the hostess of the seance get murdered?
Interesting about all the rich wives whose husbands did not want them spending money on this kind of activity; also the young man who is frantic to make money for salacious purposes.
I think there is a thread of this story that is a bit of a cliff-hanger, but not sure....

I liked this book, but I didn't love it. It seemed that we didn't have that tension between Mrs. Brandt and Malloy like we normally do. I did like the seance part and thought it was probably pretty true to that time frame. I enjoyed learning about the flashlight. I had no idea why it was named that, so learned a little something in this book.
I liked the fact that Mrs. Decker was involved in this one and how she being a smart lady could fall for a scam. I guess it all comes down to how much pain ...more

While I always enjoy these books I don't think this one moved anything forward except, perhaps, Maeve's roll in the household and exposing more of her past. This was the best part of the book, in my opinion, and it's a shame because I've been waiting for Sarah and Frank to get closer or at least acknowledge their feelings. Social standings in the turn of the 20th Century seems archaic but one thing that still stands even today....

Mrs. Decker has a lot of pain and guilt over the death of her oldest daughter. A friend tells her about a woman who talks to the dead. The spiritualist can help her apologize to Maggie. Sarah’s first instinct is to warn her mother that this is probably a scam, but she understands her mother’s pain. Begrudgingly, Sarah agrees to attend the séance too. Afterwards, Sarah tries to convince her mother that the people are phony and after her money. Elizabeth Decker doesn’t heed her daughter’s advice a

Yet another wonderful book in the series. The books are intelligently written and well-plotted, something that I'm needing more and more to stay interested in a book.

This was another nice one to the series. I enjoyed being back in this world. Didn't do much to move their relationship forward but at this point, I've stopped expecting that. It was an interesting view into seances in this mystery. ...more
