Midwife Sarah Brandt is summoned to see her patient Agnes Otto, thinking it’s time to deliver her baby but finds her dangerously overwhelmed by grief after learning of the brutal murder of her 16-year old sister, Gerda. As Sarah delves deeper, she discovers that Gerda was a “Charity Girl,” the name given to the young girls who frequent dance halls and accept “gifts” and give “favors” in return. Despite the horrendous crime, no one is inclined to investigate as the common attitude is that the vic

Midwife Sarah Brandt is called to the home of Agnes Otto. The heavily pregnant woman is in distress after learning that her sixteen-year-old sister, Gerda, has been murdered. Gerda and her friends are known as "Charity Girls", young women who like the city's nightlife and accept gifts from men in exchange for favors. It looks like one of these men may have killed Gerda. Since many people believe that Gerda got what she deserved, and the Otto family can't afford to pay the police to investigate,

Murder on St. Mark's Place
4 Stars
Attending to a routine delivery, midwife Sarah Brandt learns that the pregnant woman’s younger sister has been murdered. The victim, Gerda Reinhard, had been supplementing her seamstress salary by “working” as a “charity girl” - a young woman who exchanges her “company” for trinkets and an evening’s entertainment. With little police interest in the case, Sarah enlists the aid of Detective Frank Malloy and the two uncover a trail of death that leads from Coney Isl ...more

This was another fun book in this series.
I enjoy the setting and the characters a lot. I like that we got to see some character development from Sarah and Frank. I was happy to see how their relationship is slowly developing over the books.
I enjoyed the mystery for the most part, though I did guess some of the things that happened in this book, I still enjoyed the process of finding out.
It also takes some part of this book discussing what option you had as a deaf/mute - which didn't have anythi ...more

I don't remember who recommended this series to me, but I'm grateful. Murder on St. Mark's Place is set in NYC at the end of 1800s. In addition to the good mystery, it is interesting to see how difficult life was for the poor or middle class. Women didn't have any options except find a husband.
The main characters Sarah Brandt and Detective Malloy are captivating. There isn't a romance but a growing respect between two very different people.
I'm looking forward to reading more in this series. ...more

Astor Place is one of the best series-starting books I've read. I already knew that Detective Frank Malloy and midwife Sarah Brandt had a complicated (but platonic) relationship but, until reading Astor I had no idea how complicated. Reading that, immediately followed by St. Mark's, pulled me into their developing relationship more quickly and deeply than I'd anticipated. I have a pile of 4 other books that I've already borrowed from the library for this challenge so I can't read the next in the

Re-read this book and it was just as enjoyable the second time around. It's a solid historical mystery with a pair of wonderful protagonists.

For as smart as Sarah Brandt seems she sure missed some obvious clues in this one. I’m probably being overly judgmental given she certainly has societal blindspots given the time period but I wanted so much more wit from her than we got. It’s refreshing to have a somewhat lighthearted historical paint the truly bleak picture of how women were regarded in the past - something romances especially seem to just gloss right over. I adore Sarah and her relationship with Malloy, and can’t turn down a g
