Harry's investigation of the murder of an Asian liquor store owner in Los Angeles leads him to Hong Kong in a race to save someone very dear to him.
While this wasn't one of my favorites, I still found it hard to stop listening to the story. There was a recklessness about Harry that I hadn't seen before and it had some devastating consequences. My instincts about the case ended up being dead on though I didn't get everything right. Len Cariou did an excellent job in narrating given the internati ...more

A new homicide case has Harry Bosch investigating the death of a Chinese man who owned a liquor store. It seems like a robbery gone wrong, but Harry's investigation points to a Chinese triad (gang) connection. When Harry and Detective Chu make an arrest in the case, Harry receives a video of his daughter, Maddie, who has been kidnapped in Hong Kong. Harry drops everything to go to Hong Kong and rescue his daughter from the hands of the triad.

Nine Dragons
3 Stars
While investigating a routine homicide with apparent ties to the Chinese Triads, Detective Harry Bosch finds the case hitting a little too close to home when he receives threats and his daughter, Maddie, is kidnapped in Hong Kong. Will Harry be able to find her in time?
Harry Bosch is definitely my favorite of all Connolly's protagonists. Nevertheless, his portrayal in this installment leaves much to be desired, and it might be that the series has passed its prime.

Major events happen in this novel. I watch the series on Amazon so I was not surprised by what happened in this book even though it was still different. I'm still liking the series but I wish I could stop noticing how awkward the internal and external dialogues sometimes are.

I listened to this one and it was a fast moving story that took place in both the US and Hong Kong and it was a great listen. The narrator did a fantastic job and the characters were very interesting.
I had figured out who the killer was or who was responsible near the beginning, but I did have one little surprise at the end. It was interesting how Harry has no regard for police procedure unless it is his procedure.

4.5 stars - This story left me speechless and in a state of shock. I don't know what to say. Another good addition to the series seems inadequate. It is that, of course. But the things that occur in Nine Dragons left me reeling and wondering where in the world Harry Bosch's story goes from here. Connelly's mastery of plot, character, setting, police procedural, and human nature has never been more evident. He uses all to manipulate this story, leaving characters and readers in emotional turmoil.
