I just love this series. This is the sixth book in the Armand Gamache Series. I love the characters and love Three Pines. The characters have become my friends. They are so real and yet so quirky. I remember when I first started the series I thought that I would never remember all of their names because there seemed to be so many people, but now I can easily recall each person. And of course, the continuity is always provided by Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, who is a central character in each I just love this series. This is the sixth book in the Armand Gamache Series. I love the characters and love Three Pines. The characters have become my friends. They are so real and yet so quirky. I remember when I first started the series I thought that I would never remember all of their names because there seemed to be so many people, but now I can easily recall each person. And of course, the continuity is always provided by Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, who is a central character in each novel.
I had intended to savor this book and read it slowly, but from page one I got hooked and I couldn't stop because I had to find out how all these stories would be concluded. Louise's ability to juggle so many situations and characters at the same time is amazing. Some people considered this series to be "cozies", but they are much more in depth than a cozy, especially "Bury Your Dead".

Armand Gamache is taking a break from police work after a particularly traumatic case that left him, and members of his team, both physically and emotionally wounded. When a dead body is found in the Literary and Historical Society basement, one of the employees recognizes Gamache and requests his assistance. The body leads to another mystery surrounding the founder of Quebec, Samuel de Champlain. Meanwhile, Gamache is plagued by a question from a previous case in Three Pines and sends Jean Guy to quietly re-investigate to see if they missed or mis-read clues.

"Bury Your Dead" takes you to several locations throughout Canada, but her skill in tying it all back to Three Pines and the residents there is wonderful. I have no desire to spoil any of the storyline(s) for you, so I will just say that if you like your reading to include sly wit, heartbreaking emotions and a deep understanding of what makes us human, this is the book (and series) for you. Gamache is on holiday to get his head back on straight after what happened to him and his team a month or so ago. What happened to the team is explained gradually as the story moves forward.

As in the previous book, Louise Penny takes Gamache and the readers down a different path. Chief Inspector Armande Gamache is questioning everything about his position, his abilit Bury Your Dead , number six in the Inspector Gamache series, begins a short time after the events that ended the previous book. Gamache is on holiday to get his head back on straight after what happened to him and his team a month or so ago. What happened to the team is explained gradually as the story moves forward.

As in the previous book, Louise Penny takes Gamache and the readers down a different path. Chief Inspector Armande Gamache is questioning everything about his position, his abilities, and whether he can continue in his current position. He takes his loving wife to the Winter Carnival in Quebec City, where he visits with his mentor. His wife hopes he will have some success getting Gamache to discuss his pain and worries.

Instead of Gamache’s relaxing during his holiday, he gets pulled into three investigations. The first attempt to get Gamache involved in an investigation is from the Three Pines. The residents believe that Gamache got the last investigation wrong. They all know Oliver and send Gamache notes to convince him that Oliver was not the murderer. Gamache assigns his second in command, Inspector Beauvoir, to review the clues that led to Oliver’s arrest. Beauvoir is dealing with his demons from the previous case and struggles with going over the case again.

Gamache spends a lot of time in the library researching Quebec history. When a fellow history buff and archeologist is found dead in the library’s basement, the staff begs Gamache to help. His investigation focuses on many old animosities between the English and French that still exist in the province.

In my opinion, this is the best book in the series so far. Parts of the story slow down a little compared to the previous books. However, I believe that is intentional because Gamache is moving slowly. The book is full of Canadian history. I didn’t realize there was so much animosity between the English-speaking and the French-speaking people of Quebec. The mystery of Samuel De Champlain and his tightly protected legend is quite intriguing. Finally, the reveal of Gamache’s physical and emotional pain from his last case is heart-wrenching and even made me teary at times.

This is a beautifully revealing story of Armade Gamache that was made better by the narrator, Ralph Cosham. He knows these characters, and his gift of bringing them to life is impressive. I totally enjoyed this story. ...more

Every time I think one of Louise Penny's books is as masterfully crafted as a book can be, I read the next in her Inspector Gamache series and discover that I am wrong as this next book is even better. That's happened yet again.
