This is an excellent series. It is a historical mystery. I just love historical mysteries.

Sebastian St. Cyr is greatly challenged with this most recent crime. French physician Damion Pelletan is found murdered in the alley of St. Katharines, a poor section of London. His mutilated body was discovered by Paul Gibson after first encountering Damion's unconscious companion, Alexandrie Sauvage, lying nearby.
The course of the investigation was pretty complicated as it was entangled with French history and politics, as well as English interests and Lord Jarvis. As usual, while there were ...more

These books are just plain addictive. I buzz right through one and can't wait to start the next. The different layers and plots just make me want to continue this series. Here there were several really good suspects, but no one seems to fit all the different murders and the attempts on Sebastian's life. Quite puzzling, right to the end. Loved how Hero and Sebastian are growing together and their baby also grows. When complications happen, it is great to see how very much Hero has come to mean to

Why Kings Confess
4.5 Stars
In his latest case, Regency investigator, Sebastian St. Cyr becomes involved in a wicked web of political intrigue and murder when the body of a young French doctor is discovered in the slums of London. As Sebastian investigates, he discovers the victim's connection not only to a secret peace delegation sent by Napoleon, but also his link to the remaining French royals living in exile in England. Was the murder a result of these connections?

Loving this series! It seems like every book is better than the last.

RATING: 4 STARS
Why Kings Confess takes Sebastian into his past. A time he is not so proud of. A badly beaten French woman is found beside a dead mutilated body of Dr. Damion Pelletan. Alexi Sauvage has no memory of how she got to be there, but Sebastian remembers her from the past. The present day case takes him back to his dark days. Alexi Sauvage is a such a well written character. She is one of my favourite secondary characters so far. This novel gives us another insight into why Sebastian we ...more

2025 Update
This is one of my favorite stories in the series. I listened to the book this time. Davinia Palmer does an excellent job bringing these characters and events to life. Sebastian loves and supports Hero. They couldn't be a better couple.
2020
I cannot believe how good this series is. The murder, wrapped in the history of Regency England and the Napoleonic war, is so interesting. That alone would be five stars, but add in the relationship between Sebastian and Hero bumps it up a notch.

Maybe 4.5 stars.
Half star deducted for dangling loose ends, which needed answers. All those deaths and details should have been resolved more satisfactorily.
Having said this, another excellent story.
Regency childbirth preparations horrid in some instances....

I enjoy this series but I like them better when the main plot doesn’t involve politics as this one did. I had waited a while to read this because I knew from the synopsis I might not like it as much as the others in the series. Well, I didn’t but I also had forgotten during the hiatus from the series how much I enjoyed the main characters and how well this author writes. Dr. Damion Pelletan is killed and Sebastian is going to find out how and why. He plunges deep into the mystery of the lost Dauphin, the young prince who disappeared in the darkest days of the French Revolution. Hero is about ready to deliver her baby. Can Sebastian face the guilt from the past that is too terrible to consider?

5 big bright stars!! This series just gets better and better. Hero and Devlin *sigh* - such a slow burning, beautiful love story. Loved that Gibson had a larger role in this book, he's one of my favorite characters. The mystery was well crafted and researched - kudos Ms Harris!! Now the hard part - waiting a year for the next installment. Always worth the wait!
