You get two character focuses in one in this story. It really serves you well to have read Blood Work first to get a good sense of Terry McCaleb. I believe it made a difference in my enjoyment. While this is the 7th book in the Harry Bosch series, it's the 8th in that universe and the second in the Terry McCaleb series.

Former Criminal Profiler Terry McCaleb is asked by the Sheriff's Department to look into a case that has grown cold. As Terry reads the file, he builds a profile of the perpetrator. As the picture in his mind becomes clearer, his suspect is none other than Los Angeles Homicide Detective Harry Bosch. Bosch knew the murder victim and had actually spoke to him the night of the murder. Did he follow the victim home? Would a decorated policeman stoop to cold-blooded murder? Or is Harry being set up?

A Darkness More Than Night
4 Stars
Retired FBI profiler, Terry McCaleb finds himself embroiled in another case when he is approached to review an unsolved murder with disturbingly ritualistic elements. Terry is soon horrified by the realization that his profile points to one suspect - a fellow law enforcement officer and friend - LAPD Detective Harry Bosch.
Series note: This is book #2 in the Terry McCaleb series. It also slots in after book #7 of the Harry Bosch series. Numerous references are ma ...more

This book was not your typical Harry Bosch novel as Terry McCaleb was the retired FBI agent and Harry Bosch was the main suspect. It was a little slow to take off but once it did, it was a page-turner to the very end. Connelly is very good at developing characters, both good and bad, that are very intriguing and ones you'll feel are very real. I need to go back and read Blood Work as that's the book that introduces Terry McCaleb, a character which I like very much. This plot was very enjoyable a

5 Fantastic Stars!! Absolutely loved it! Harry and Terry together? Dynamite! Great plot line, brilliantly woven with twists & turns to keep readers guessing. Connelly is a master at exposing the deepest, darkest demons that haunt and drive men like Harry...and Terry. Highly recommend reading Blood Work prior to this one for the background and foundation built around Terry. As always, the police procedural is spot-on. Another awesome read in this series. A Must Read!

I'm conflicted about whether this 4.5 star book should be raised to 5* or remain at 4*.
My understanding of the character and mind of Terry McCaleb from the first book did not mesh completely with his jumping to conclusions about Harry. The story did, however, deal with the conflicts that are possible when one follows logic and methodological investigation apart from knowing a subject's true character.

This was a very easy book to read. It had murder and mayhem. While Harry always gets his man, it sometimes is not under regular circumstances. The addition of Terry McCaleb was a very good twist to this story too. It seemed from the beginning that Terry and Harry were on opposite sides and I believe that Michael Connelly wanted it that way.
In this book you glimpsed some of the dark side of Harry Bosch and while I know he is not squeaky clean, I really want to believe he is.

Another brilliant instalment in the Harry Bosch series plus finishing the Terry McCaleb series. I Guly recommend reading Blood Work first.
