Twisty tale of the murder of a young marchioness with an elderly husband. But, this is far more than a simple who done it. Political intrigue, family secrets, lots and lots of family secrets and Sebastian almost getting killed, again. I swear that man has all but used up his allotted nine lives. Fast paced, twisty, wonderfully depicted scenes and characters. Some foreshadowing, although I'm not big on literary themes like that, of events to unfold in later books.

The story begins with what appears to be the murder of a young woman in Prince George's rooms....in his presence. Sebastian decides to investigate after finding jewelry on the woman's body that has special meaning to him.

What makes this story fascinating is the high political intrigue woven into what first looks like a simple assignation gone wrong. Against the backdrop of Regency period history, the case takes on a vibrant life and the pace seems perfect. Sebastian's relationship with Kat cont

I finally set a stack of arcs aside to read this book which has been on my list way too long and I'm glad I did! The characters, case, personal relationships all coincide with an explosive ending that leaves me begging for more! Now to work in book 3! Highly recommend the book and series. ...more

Three and a half stars

I'm really starting to get into this series. I felt that the pacing was better in this book and the actual mystery didn't seem so convoluted. I really like Sebastian and I'm feeling more and more drawn into the mystery of his mother and his family. The drama unfolding there is what is starting to hook me. From what I've seen with these first two books, I'd definitely say that this is a mystery first and foremost, with a romantic element in the background. That suits me just

RATING: 4 STARS

When Gods Die, the second book in the Sebastian St Cyr series is just as great the first novel. Maybe the sequel is even better than the first book. Now that we have all the introductions and descriptions over with, we can enjoy the mystery. Harris still describes the time and place, especially the politics of the time, but the pacing is faster when it comes to getting to the mystery. We have the Prince Regent as the suspect this time, which makes for a sticky situation indeed. Th

When Gods Die

When the Prince Regent is discovered with the body of a dead marchioness in his arms, Sebastian St. Cyr is lured into the investigation as the young woman is wearing a unique necklace that was thought lost at sea with his mother. As the case progresses and the body count rises, Sebastian uncovers a deadly conspiracy that may just bring down the monarchy...

An excellent sequel.

Harris once again demonstrates her skill at merging fact and fiction. She manages to capture the perv

This one ended up so-so for me. I liked the first book in the series (What Angels Fear), but this one didn't grip me as much, and took me a very long time to finish. I also wish that Devlin would make better use of his condition that gives him superior senses. Why have a character with such a cool gift if he's not going to use it? I'll probably give this series one more go before deciding if I want to read them all or let it be. ...more

I quite enjoyed this story. Sebastian St Cyr's crime solving is wonderfully paced and by the end of the story all the strands come together. C.S. Harris is able to bring early 19th century London to life. ...more

The young wife of an aging marquis is found murdered in the arms of the Prince Regent. Around her neck lies a necklace said to have been worn by Druid priestesses-that is, until it was lost at sea with its last owner, Sebastian St. Cyr's mother. Now Sebastian is lured into a dangerous investigation of the marchioness's death-and his mother's uncertain fate.
As he edges closer to the truth-and one murder follows another-he confronts a conspiracy that imperils those nearest him and threatens to bri

*4.5 this was a reread. Enjoyed it as much as the first time. Ms Harris does a masterful job of solving the crime but also weaving in a related secondary story arc that continues throughout the series. Looking forward to a reread of book 3!!
