I loved how the suspects kept jumping on the list, then off the list, then back on again. It made for a really interesting book. I'm glad that Sebastian could keep it all straight, because I lost track of the real baddie. There is so much to love about this book, and I like forward to continuing the series.

Unique & intriguing, What Angels Fear is a fantastic historical fiction story! A great start to an enticing series! Great characterizations, twisted plotlines, detailed setting all combine to make for one fascinating tale with enough unanswered questions to send me searching for book 2! Highly recommended!

This is a re-read for me. I only gave it 2 stars in 2013, and I don't know whether I finished it or not. Sometimes, I find myself not liking books when my frame of mind is not receptive to an author's work.
Whatever the earlier reason, I read this first Sebastian St Cyr book for a group series read, and I'm glad I did. I came to like this Regency investigator who is fighting to clear his name, when all about London it is assumed that he was the murderer in a particularly gruesome crime.

I am new to the historical murder mystery genre, and I'm finding I like it. I really like these characters, they are interesting with many layers. The cast of support characters address many of the issues with the British class system of the late 1800s. There is something for everyone--an array of villains, not just the murderer. Tom, the young street urchin who attaches to Sebastian, politicians, lovers, and friends.
I'm ready for more Sebastian.

This was a reread - originally read in 2006.
Solid 4 stars.
Having read the entire series to-date, it was fun to go back where it all began. I enjoyed the story, and the great cast of characters, as much as I did the first time around. It's interesting to have the perspective of what happens to the characters in future books. The series gets much stronger as it goes along, the characters more fully developed (Hero, Gibson, Tom). Looking forward to a reread of book 2!! ...more

This book is set in 1811 England, and figures a lead character who is accused of murder and goes on the run to prove his innocence. It is set against the beginning of the Regency period (when the future George IV is made Regent, because his father George III is declared mad) which leads to a backdrop of political machinations. This really is an excellent read and I look forward to continuing the series.
