When a young boy goes missing and is found brutally murdered in Platte City Nebraska days later, Sheriff Nick Morelli is advised to get help from FBI profiler Maggie O'Dell, especially after it appears to match previous crimes of a serial killer who was executed months earlier. O'Dell, however, is still reeling from a harrowing capture of a vicious killer a month ago where she almost lost her life.

When a Death Row inmate awaiting execution confesses that he didn't kill two of the three boys he was convicted of murdering, Father Francis was not surprised. He had already heard the confession of the other killer.
A few months later, a young boy disappears. Sheriff Nick Morrelli knows he and his deputies are not prepared for the situation and when the boy's body is found and another child disappears, he contacts FBI Criminal Profiler Maggie O'Dell to put together a picture of the killer.

The plot is very well constructed, if you ignore the obvious lack of police procedure (DNA, fingerprints) and a serious animus for Catholics. The romantic involvement of Nick and Maggie promised much, but delivered noting.

The subject matter was a bit disturbing to think about, but the story was a good one. Maggie O'Dell is an FBI agent with many issues (personally and professionally) but she is still able to do her job. Nick Morelli is a misunderstood Sheriff who needs to show he's worthy of the job and I feel he accomplishes that. There is some light humor thrown in that is needed at times. There is also an issue at the end of the book that I felt was too obvious. The best part about the whole thing was that it

Somewhat predictable but engrossing nonetheless.
The main characters are outlined well and there are hints of an underlying story that is still to come.

4.5 STARS
" serial killer eludes an FBI profiler and a smalltown Nebraska sheriff in Kava's engaging debut, which manages to remain entertaining despite a fairly conventional plot line. As the story opens, recently appointed Sheriff Nick Morelli is as relieved as the rest of the citizens of Platte City that his predecessor, who also happens to be his father, has captured the child killer who plagued the town. I really enjoyed this book. It got 4 stars only because of the ending...I feel like it was long and dragged out. I really liked the plot of the book and the characters were really developed and I can't wait to see where the Stucky case goes.

Author's debut.
I can't figure out whether I missed loads of what is still bugging me about the red herrings in this book, or if the author did it on purpose with the first book in her Maggie O'Dell series.
Not for the faint of heart, or for those who cannot bear to read about crimes against children. It doesn't dwell on the gore, but it doesn't avoid it either.
It remains to be seen if any of the characters in this book reappear, other than those involved in Maggie's personal and professional life ...more
