Having just come off listening to the brilliant Neverwhere, I was super aware of how much American Gods was not on the same level as far as story goes. I felt there was something missing in this that I can't really put my finger on.. I never became attached to my characters, the digressing into all these side stories was terribly distracting and quite frankly bored me. Writing was great, but overall completely average.

This was an epic and fascinating tale. I feel like I needed an annotated version because there is just so much in here that I'm sure I missed. It was packed with references, myths, lore, history, geography, religion and all kinds of magic. I've been warned that this is a love it or hate it book and I've on the love it side for sure. 10th Anniversary Edition.

Even with the extra 20,000 words, it's still hard to not be reading this book anymore. I want to keep hearing about what Shadow, Sam Black Crow, and the Gods are up to. I also want to take some more road trips.

The audiobook release with this is a very well done full cast recording.

The most simple thing I can say about having read this book is that I wish I was still reading it. The book does begin slowly, but then the journey becomes more addictive as it unwinds. I hated that the book ended, the stories seemed that they ought to go on forever.

I just love Neil Gaiman! It was a bit hard to follow at times because of all the characters, but it all came together at the end. Wonderful book!
