What Members Thought
Having just come off listening to the brilliant Neverwhere, I was super aware of how much American Gods was not on the same level as far as story goes. I felt there was something missing in this that I can't really put my finger on.. I never became attached to my characters, the digressing into all these side stories was terribly distracting and quite frankly bored me. Writing was great, but overall completely average.

I found the dates of when I first read American Gods, so I've added the book here along with selected snippets of my diary entries from the time that I read it. It's interesting that it was exactly 10 years ago that I read it (25th June-3rd July 2002/27th June-10th July 2012).
Only selecting a few short snippets for here, as I was v. young, wrote poorly, and clearly didn't understand parts of the book when I first read it!

This was an epic and fascinating tale. I feel like I needed an annotated version because there is just so much in here that I'm sure I missed. It was packed with references, myths, lore, history, geography, religion and all kinds of magic. I've been warned that this is a love it or hate it book and I've on the love it side for sure. In fact, I hope there is an annotated version some day (even though this book would have to be enormous) because I'd love to dive even deeper into it.

10th Anniversary Edition.
Even with the extra 20,000 words, it's still hard to not be reading this book anymore. I want to keep hearing about what Shadow, Sam Black Crow, and the Gods are up to. I also want to take some more road trips.
The audiobook release with this is a very well done full cast recording. ...more

OK, I will never see a toaster the same thanks to this book. Hair irons, tv's and other appliacnes are now wirey, furious objects that want to be worshipped. Who knew?
