Probably my favorite sci-fi book. It is only one of a series (I think it went up to 5) but only the first 3 are worth reading.
Imagine waking up on a river with everyone from all times along a river that never ends. Book has some historical characters in it and basically it is about the people trying to journey up the river to find the gods or whoever made this world. The first is fantastic and I have read it many times.
