It was hard to gain traction at the start of this short book, which seemed overwrought. After about 10 pages, when we shift from the narrator's apprehension of "the northeastern girl" to the character herself, the telling improves 10-fold. I loved the writing and the portrait and the approach. New Lispector fan.

I don't have much to say about what 'happens' in this book, other than it pays off to be patient. I was completely won over by this unconventional tale of love and wretchedness, and particularly enjoyed the unreliable narration and unconventional story telling techniques.
