Bulawayo's writing is brilliant - sharp, witty, searing - and I loved the first half of the book, set in Zimbabwe. For the me the second half, with Darling in America just didn't have the same impact and felt a bit meandering/disjointed - as other reviewers have noted, more like a series of interlinked vignettes/stories than a novel. ...more

I was excited going into this, and it started out well. It was interesting and very poetic, the words just flying through my head. But eventually I realized that there is no story. It is entirely a novel of observation and detailing the ways of life and how people are affected by the events of the world. The main character has almost no characterization that distinguishes her from the rest and it almost becomes a novel written in the plural POV. Indeed, a part was written with we as the subject,

I was hoping to earn a little more about Zimbabwe's history, but being told from a 10 year old girls perspective its pretty limited. It offers a really good insight into the reality for new immigrants into America though.
