This is a wonderfully written novel with a haunting atmosphere set in the Sudan in the mid-20th century. The narrator has returned to his home village from being educated in England. A stranger has settled in the village, a man, like himself, who was also educated in England. A weird mix of Sudanese village life, cross-exotification of European/African cultures, sociopaths, and men being pieces of shit.

I have really mixed feelings on this one. It is a well written novel with some really great descriptions. I try to read about different cultures to try and educate myself (and pick up some good SCRABBLE words!) , however the treatment of women in this book made some of it very difficult to digest.
