This semi-autobiographical novel tells the story of the sensitive Philip Carey, orphaned as a boy. Following sojourns in Germany and Paris, he returns to London to begin training as a doctor. There he meets Mildred, and begins an unhappy and obsessive love affair that distracts him from his studies and sends him into poverty.

I read this book twice and fell slavishly in love with it, and yet it is hard to remember the details. Still, I do remember the degradation and boatload of bad decisions! I loved those. Anyway, I adored this cold, callous bitch of a book and have nothing to show for it.
