I've really liked Amy Tan's books before, but for some reason, I couldn't get into this one. I think it might have been because of the frequent switch in narrators; I couldn't remember some of the characters' names (probably because I read this over several weeks), so I wasn't able to connect the stories from section to section. Many of the individual chapters were quite interesting, but not enough to make me excited about reading the book. ...more

I first discovered Amy Tan as a college student when one of her short stories was an assignment in a literature class. I loved the story and had to find the book it was in, which turned out to be The Joy Luck Club. I had never read anything like it before and fell in love.
