Assassin's Apprentice is one of those books that makes it to the top of all "best fantasy" lists which is understandable as it hits all of the classic fantasy beats: young boy from an inauspicious start finds a worldly-wise mentor, gets embroiled in courtly/diplomatic intrigue, and through luck/fate/cleverness finds hidden strength (often in the form of warrior skills, untapped magic, etc.).
