Five stars and a statue goes to best portrayed Victorian London book !
This is incredible combination of humor, kitsch, folklore with the writer’s talented and never ending imagination.
We meet one of the most interesting heroines, Bride Devine , a woman detective, wearing a dagger strapped to her thigh, smoking pipe, solving murders by reading corpses and talking with ghosts.
It seems like one of the heroes , also the part of love triangle is Ruby Doyle, champion boxer who is also dead.

3.5 stars rounded down.
Initially I picked this up at the library 1) to fulfill a challenge requirement and 2) because I had seen it on Goodreads. This covers a wide range of genres including/ but not limited to: sci-fi, mystery, steam punk and historical fiction. Overall it was interesting, putting a different spin on folklore surround mermaids. It was unique and enjoyable, but a bit murky in places.

Wow... what a delicious book! Excellent prose, amazing characterisation and brilliant plot - everything you could possibly ask for. The narration was so heady and atmospheric that I felt like I needed my own time to enjoy it bit by bit, not wanting to finish it on one go (like a bar of very special and rare chocolate.)
