“I am very interested and fascinated how everyone loves each other, but no one really likes each other.”

This is the second time I’m reading this book and for me, this was a much better experience than the first. It’s not like I hated it when I read it initially, but I think I was in a different mindset altogether for my reread and that seemed to have influenced me enjoying the words more than before. You know sometimes how a book calls to you? And you simply have to pick it up because it feels l “I am very interested and fascinated how everyone loves each other, but no one really likes each other.”

It’s not like I hated it when I read it initially, but I think I was in a different mindset altogether for my reread and that seemed to have influenced me enjoying the words more than before. You know sometimes how a book calls to you? And you simply have to pick it up because it feels like the right time, well, The Perks of Being a Wallflower felt that way to me this time around.

This is a story of a teenager, Charlie, who lets us in his world in form of letters. We don’t know who he’s sending them to, but the way it’s written makes each reader the receiver and makes the story more personal. He pulls us in and makes us a part of the story. The entire book lasts through one school year; we see Charlie navigate through school in a manner which seems fit to him, throughout the book we see him form observations which are not only insightful but live with you for a long time. In the process, we are acquainted with Sam and Patrick, both of whom are seniors. With them, he isn’t looked down upon and that leads him to trust and form a genuine bonding with the two. Charlie’s crush on Sam shows us how pure his admiration and love for her is, and how much he really cares for her. There are many moments in the book which make you feel all the heart melting emotions because of the way he describes her. His friendship with Patrick is different altogether, but when Pat is at his lowest, we see Charlie going beyond his capabilities to help his friend recover. While it might not have been the healthiest for him, he does he utmost best. With each letter, we learn what kind of person Charlie truly is. I also loved the relationship he has with his English teacher, Bill, who lends Charlie books and helps him realise his potential. But in the backdrop, there’s something dark looming in corner which is revealed in the end.

“So, this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I'm still trying to figure out how that could be.”

This is a coming of age story, for people feeling lost in between, looking for spaces to fill, seeking friendships which offer comfort and understanding, coming into own as a person and learning to be confident. If you are someone who enjoys books covering the formative years of young adults, stories focused on friendships, heartache, and teenage angst this is the book for you.

I love this book so much and I hate that it's over. First because I just finished an amazing book that I will always remember, second because I just finished an amazing book and I'll never experience reading it the same way again. Also I think that I read this book at the perfect time in my life when I hate being a teenager because I never understand why I feel how I feel and the main character is the same way and I also think I struggle at "participating" in life.
