Dead Until Dark. I'll give this book a 2-2.5 stars as a rating.

This is the first book by Charlaine Harris that I've ever read and unfortunately, I can't say that it's a "two thumbs up" book. But I can't say that it's a totally lame one either. When I bought this book, I was excited to read it because I really love books about vampires, wolves and such. Plus, every writer has his or her own version of when, where and how the creatures became what they are. So when I started reading this book, I g Dead Until Dark. This is the first book by Charlaine Harris that I've ever read and unfortunately, I can't say that it's a "two thumbs up" book. But I can't say that it's a totally lame one either. When I bought this book, I was excited to read it because I really love books about vampires, wolves and such. Plus, every writer has his or her own version of when, where and how the creatures became what they are. So when I started reading this book, I got really disappointed.

It's just that for one, the story line wasn't build up in a good way. There was no origin, no detailed explanation where the vampires came from or when did they really started to appear in the story unlike in any other vampire books such as The Last Vampire by Christopher Pike or The Twilight Series or even in The Vampire Diaries.

Two, Sookie, the main character is too naive to the point that it's really impossible. So she's a virgin, ok. But she works in a bar, she can read minds and she knows her brother has some sexcapades of his own, so duh? Does she really have to be so naive about vampires and their sex life? There was also a time where it seems like she couldn't decide if she really likes to try a relationship with Bill or not. It didn't feel like they were inlove. It felt like they were just lusting with each other.

Three, Bill. Maybe I was wrong to expect a very strong vampire out of him but could you blame me? He's a vampire. He was supposed to be stronger and smarter. That's why, we, humans, wants to be like them, right? Because they are extraordinary. But in the story, it's like Bill is just an average vampire. He is so BORING. His life is boring. Their love story was boring. I get it that Eric is much older, wiser and has a higher ranking in their own society but is it so hard to build up Bill's character a little more?

Another character was Bubba formerly known as Elvis. There's no detailed story about him so I got confused about what's his connection with Bill. Given, there's a few background about him but it's just wasn't enough.

And last but not the least, was the sex. I don't know what's Harris thinking while writing those scenes. The timing, the words used to describe what's happening, it's just-I don't know what to say anymore.

I do like Sam although it would even be more better if Harris didn't take too long to reveal his secret. I think it could've add up a little more spice with Bill-Sookie-Sam love triangle if his secret was revealed much earlier. The mystery with the killings was good. It was the only thing that kept me going to finish the book, to be honest. But other than that, nada. And the ending, *sigh*, I just wish that it should've make me want more. Make me thrilled to read the next book in the series. But as it turns out, it didn't.

So if you'll ask me if I will recommend this book, I'll still say yes if you are still interested in reading the book after all my musings about it. But don't expect too much so you won't get so disappointed after finishing it. ...more
