I first read this in high school, so it has been a long time--although I have also seen the classic film starring Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch. I am not a person who listens to many audiobooks, so this was an interesting experience.
Firstly, the reader (obviously a genuime Southerner) was a gifted voice actress. She subtly differentiated characters, often conveyimg satire but never going overboard into mawkishness or silliness.

I was reading this book with the sole intention of wanting to know how you kill a mockingbird. But damn it! There was not even a god damn sentence on how you kill those annoying pestilence who have made nest in my backyard. So, if this book was suppose to be a guide...this book sucks!

I read this book (aloud) several times to my students. I really enjoy the story, and I believe that they did too, although the theme is a bit unclear to the unsophisticated reader. They believed the father to be racist until the end of the book, which made it difficult for them to "buy-in" to the premise that there was something to learn from the characters. In the end however, they were surprised by the twists and appreciated the message.

I feel bad for not liking this more, as it's such an important book. I read it so long ago that part of me wants to reread it. I was pretty young at the time I read it, maybe I could appreciate it more now that I'm older.
I just didn't connect with this book. The only poignant moments for me were the ones with Tim Robinson, and the trial that ensued. The stuff with Boo was just weird. ...more
