I thought this was a little like a Brontë novel for young adults.
There's a bit of an odd feeling to the story, what with all the talk of white magic and people with a strong connection to animals, although the author does explain it in psychological and medical terminology of the day. And then there is a powerful voice which speaks to Mr. Craven in his dream; this reminded me of the scene in Jane Eyre where Jane (also a feisty orphan, not unlike Mary Lennox) hears a voice calling her over the mo ...more
