I became interested in this book because of it’s prophetic inclinations. Also appealing to me was it’s purpose for use as a meditatitive book since it was subtitled “meditations on the quickening word of God” . The author, lays out a nice format in the table of contents of what each of the 31 thoughts on prophecy is covering involving many areas of this ministry. I found the book to indeed be a good devotional for daily reading in order to focus on the many phases of spiritual growth of the gift I became interested in this book because of it’s prophetic inclinations. Also appealing to me was it’s purpose for use as a meditatitive book since it was subtitled “meditations on the quickening word of God” . The author, lays out a nice format in the table of contents of what each of the 31 thoughts on prophecy is covering involving many areas of this ministry. I found the book to indeed be a good devotional for daily reading in order to focus on the many phases of spiritual growth of the gift of prophecy. The gift of the Holy Spirit who giveth has become controversial due to a lack of understanding and an unwillingness by far too many of those who are in a pastoral capacity to accept it’s operation.

The author addresses these concerns in a unique way through short but thoughtful sharing of her own broad experience in the prophetic ministry. In addition, she draws many biblical examples and highlights verses in support of how God works in this area. At the end of each of the 31 thoughts she gives scripture meditations to read and pray on for guidance. I also noticed how the author tended to teach by sharing events in her life that had a prophetic effect on her and ulitmately her calling in the earlier meditations. But near the end of the book begins to demonstrate prophesying concerning “why the nations rage”. Clearly putting forth God’s word on Israel’s deliverance as revealed in scripture as a world of unbelief surrounds them. This may surprise some but not me as I am very much aware and a minister of God’s word concerning this part of prophecy.

There are many good thoughts to cite but I’ll recall one that I really felt was poignant. The author write “Many professing Christians are like Lot, wondering how close to Sodom can they pitch their tent and still be in the Lord’s favor” and adept observation to say the least. Through out the book these kinds of spiritual wisdom are illuminating in support of spiritual insight. There are some wonderful witnessing events that are shared as her testimony of the gift in operation.

As a minister of God’s prophetic word myself, and well learned in biblical eschatology, I found Emily Tomko’s book “31 Thoughts on Prophecy” to be a good read. I benefited from it’s structural layout and devotional focus and will use the book as such for quick reference. I also like the fact that someone with little awareness on prophecy can gain much about this important gift for and to the House of the Lord which the scripture commands us to covet prophesy. The only personal concern with the book since it's not a negative is perhaps more elaboration on some of the thoughts. A few seemed too short and desired for more of the author's insight. Other than that, the book accomplishes it’s mission quite well and I recommend it with a definite thumbs up!
