My thoughts on this book are similar to many other reviewers'- the subject matter had the potential to be very interesting but overall the book just fell flat. The writing was almost unbearable at parts and there was so little character development outside of the 2 main characters. I normally love books that weave between the past and present but I wish this book had just stuck with the past, as the parts that took place in the present seemed so forced. The subject of this book was incredibly interesting, but I didn't fully connect with the characters or storyline. It's worth a read to catch a glimpse of an interesting part of our history, which has undoubtedly help shape many families, but I wish the story had been as engaging as the idea.
