Wow, 12 hours without Goodreads. Anyway. I have seen this book around since it came out almost 40 years ago and put off reading it because of the hype. Then with the series, I really didn't want to read it. I don't know why that is, the hyperbole throws me off. This ended up being a pleasant surprise. Well thought out dystopian Sci-Fi well constructed, imitated by many others since it came out, I see now.

Shelves: science-fiction

How could a world where women are nothing more than breeders get made from current society? This book will give you some ideas, probably extrapolated from 2010 society.
I didn't enjoy this book because of its focus on a really sick society. I've read other books by Atwood (Oryx and Crake) and don't mlike the focus on a society where women "aren't worth shit". While we need lots of improvements, I can't see us doing that badly.
I'd classify this book as 'speculative fiction' not 'science fiction'. ...more
