Laurel Hicks
A wonderful, multifaceted tale. It occurs to me that Dickens took the form of the eighteenth-century English novelists here and improved on it vastly.

It's taken me ages to reread NN; I seemed to flounder around in the middle of it for weeks. Sometimes reading Dickens is a bit like that. Written in serial instalments, there are lots of little sub-plots and diverse characters to delight you around the central story; it makes for long reading. But no matter! The charm of it all, the humour, the sheer delight in reading it - floundering around in the middle or not - makes this another wonderfully entertaining book. Apart from the heroic Nicholas ...more
