2009:
I had a hard time when I first tried to read this first of Dickens' novels, but now that I have read all the others I thoroughly enjoyed this time through. I loved seeing the germs of all his other novels in this one book. And I could swear that Mr. Micawber did some of the writing! This was my fourteenth Dickens novel for this year. I'll start the fifteenth, The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit, soon. Then I don't know what I'll do with myself.

This is the most difficult Dickens I have read, probably because of the meandering plot. It's more a series of Pickwickian incidents with the occasional story-telling episode tossed in, along with a large character cast. But it has charm, wit, a keen sense of the ridiculous, and terrific characters. The gentle Pickwick and the gregarious (and clever) Sam Weller were my obvious favourites, but the unstoppable Mr Jingle was very entertaining, although very self-serving. Members of The Pickwick club , Mt Samuel Pickwick, Mr Augustus Snodgrass (the poet), Mr Nathiel Winkle (sportsman), Mr Tracy Tupman (lover), go through various adventures during their visits to new places. Their perambulations lead them to various hilarious situations which forms the essence of this book.
