Not my favourite Dickens by a long shot. The Nell portions were difficult to get through, but the Kit/Swiveller sections were not too bad. I didn't really like the contrast set up between angelic Nell and the Marchioness, dutifully caring for their men, on the one side and uppity, nasty Sally Brass on the other. (Not to say I didn't like the Marchioness, but why couldn't we have a "manly" woman who was also a good, moral character?) And the grandfather? What an asshole. I (view spoiler)

15.05.21, a reread. I still echo the thoughts below from 2014.
Second time I've read this, and the ending was just as sad as on the first reading. Oh, Little Nell. Reading the last chapter, you realize how many separate characters and situations Dickens threaded through the book, and how they all managed to come together in the end. A master story teller. Daniel Quilp, the villain of the piece, is an astounding character, one the reader loves to hate in his frightful grotesque-ness. He really is ...more
