At times it pays to think of books written in a different age and culture in their own context. As annoyingly extroverted and meddlesome as Emma can be at times, a book advocating openness and emotional honesty in marriage above feminine propriety and discretion is ahead of its time for the period Austen was writing in.

I know this is one of Austen's least popular books, but I loved it. It was really easily readable and I raced through it. It's not a complicated plot, but I just wanted to know how it would work out. Austen is her usual snarky self, and (despite her many faults) I love Emma. Mr Knightley is of course, delightful. ...more
