What Members Thought

Philip Pullman has managed to create novels tailor written for the childrens books market but yet still hold immense appeal for the older readers. They spin intriguing fantastical tales beautifully interwoven and with the occasional surprise. His triology "His Dark Materials" of which this book is one was featured on Top 100 BBC Books - and this, for me, is no real surprise.

Better than the movie, as most books are, but I was somewhat disappointed in it. I'd heard such great things about it, and it is a really good book, it's just not as amazing or groundbreaking as I'd expected, based on reviews by friends. Then again, I'm reading it much later than they all did initially, so that could color my view as well.

This was really well done. Exciting, but still easy enough to follow to be a good children's book. I loved Lyra and found her believable, even though she is an extraordinary child. I'm surprised by how much I liked this. I put off reading it because I didn't think I could possibly enjoy another children's fantasy series as much as I did Harry Potter, but maybe I enjoy the fantasy genre a little more than I have previously led myself to believe.
