A war story that I think would appeal to both women and men. It offers an interesting view of the siege of Leningrad with enjoyable and interesting characters and compelling stories.
Two unlikely men, a soldier and a young Jewish chess prodigy, must gather a dozen eggs during the siege of Leningrad or face certain death. Their journey to carry out this task was filled with horror and humor. Like two other books which use the trope of a journey through a hopeless land, The Road by Cormac Macarthy and Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier, I marveled at the human spirit that allowed them to continue to their goal.
