the story of a young peasant girl in 1620s persia who makes her own way instead of relying on a man was compelling. although i didn't truly connect with any of the characters (in fact, the girl remains nameless) and most of them were quite faceless, i found the study of that time to be fascinating, and i enjoyed the stories with the story. i must admit the concept of such poverty was mindboggling.
