during some passages of the heretic's daughter, tears rolled down my face. the harshest of lives, i'm not sure i could've survived it. i loved the writing, such wonderful metaphors described such horrible times. i liked the character of sarah a lot, and until about half way through the novel, had little sympathy for martha and what i believed she was doing to her family. i liked that as a reader, i saw martha the same way that sarah did, as cold, mean and uncaring, but the more i read, i began t

This book was really something. The descriptions of the jail were brutal and I felt the damp and cold along with Sarah and her family. It's so incredible to me that this went on and yet not so surprising when we can see other "witch hunts" which have happened in this country since then. Would be useful to high school students to read for a better understanding of this era.

This had a long intro; about 2oo pages of what it was like, in the years around the Salem Witch Trials, The times were tough, but all of the background ended up making the story. Once the trials began, it was faster reading.
