Somewhat interesting and educational. I applaud Mortenson for his efforts but am ambivalent regarding his dabbling in Islam. Did he need to do this (praying to Allah, etc.) in order to accomplish what he did? I don't know. Is it ok to show even a facade of accepting and respecting Islam for any reason? As a Christian, I think not. Anyway, my church's book club is discussing this in our next meeting and if it weren't for that I probably wouldn't have read it. Mortenson's heart was in the right pl

I am enjoying this book very much! I love the various settings, the descriptions of the rugged terrain in Pakistan, the idealistic goals smacking headfirst into reality, etc. Now that I have finished it, I appreciate it more. I'm glad to know something about Afghanistan and its history (thanks to Martin Chinn and The Kite Runner), so that background helped me with the last part of the book. And the last part of the book helped me further understand what's going on today (literally) in Afghanista

I enjoyed this book and appreciated the "easy read". From other reviews, I read that the adult version has much more political involvement throughout the storyline. I thought this YA version had just enough information to keep me interested, enough stories to get me invested, and an excellent assortment of photos to connect you to the people in the story. This was a quick and enjoyable read for me and it has led me to look further into the Pennies For Peace campaign. Since I am in charge of our

This is a book that I have to finish reading by next Wednesday, June 18th or face the humiliation of being the librarian in the group who did not finish reading the monthly selection. So far it's slow, though!:(
I finished reading this book during my break on Tuesday, June 17th. It's hard for me to read this because of my daughter-in-law being close to where this story takes place and the fact that my son is heading that way very soon too but I admire Mortenson and what he has done. He certainly ...more

I enjoyed this book more and more as it went on. At first, I had a hard time getting into it and I almost stopped reading it. I loved what he was doing and accomplishing, but for some reason, it was a very slow read. The last 1/3 of the book was the best part, in my opinion. It's wonderful all the work he has done/is doing, but it's also discouraging to see what an uphill battle we have ahead of us. ...more

This was a fascinating book. Greg Mortenson is probably a living saint and I admire his wife, because I know I could not be married to someone who is absent so much.
It gave a very interesting look at rural life in Pakistan and I found it very difficult to read the section occurring after 9/11. The hate he encounter while trying to support his work.

Again, I'm not a reader of non-fiction... but this was recommended by a friend for our high school mom's book group. I thought it was outstanding as the story of a man and the people he has chosen to dedicate his life to. I highly recommend this book to everyone - and think it should be mandatory reading for any parent who has a daughter.

I really like reading autobiographies, and this one was particularly interesting to me. I am curious to know more about Pakistan and Afganistan and I did learn alot. It is interesting how accidents in life can change the course of your life, as it did for Greg Mortenson. It is such a good thing he is doing!! Very moving story.
