I am always a bit nervous picking up another book by an authors whose first book I enjoyed. Afraid that I will be disappointed. I was not disappointed reading A Thousand Splendid Suns. Khaled Hosseini's writing style involves me right away in customs and traditions quite abit different from my own. I started this book last night when I put down the last one. I had loved "Kite-Runner" for its scope of history and culture, and for his powerful theme of error and redemption. This is also placed in Afghanistan, starting in the mid-1970's, just before the Soviet invasion, and it portrays the everyday life of a young girl born out of wedlock to a servant woman; the girl's father is extremely wealthy, with 3 wives and 10 other children. This book is, by far, a favorite for me. It is defintely not a disappointing follow up to a great debut novel, The Kite Runner. It is a heart-wrenching, powerful story with characters that you love and hate. Parts of it are very difficult to read, but I could not put it down. Mariam and Laila will be with me for a long time and I only wish that I can be as strong and dedicated as they are.

I enjoyed this book much more than "Kite Runner." Where Kite Runner was depressing and centered around deception and betrayal, "A Thousand Splendid Suns" was more about support and friendship. I always enjoying reading about other cultures, too.

This book was surprising in content and rich in cultural context. I could really feel for the women characters' plight. Mr. Hosseini is a wonderful storyteller and opens the reader's ideas to new places and times in our complex world.

I have a love/hate relationship with this author. I love this book but the story makes me sad and angry. Same with the Kite Runner. That won't stop me from recommending them to any and all.
