WOW! Just could not put this book down at all!! I just wanted to keep reading to see how the story progressed! I have to say that the final section was not my favorite (having to do withe the war in Iraq and the factors that are keeping soldiers there...just substitute Afghanistan for Iraq and you will understand why I do not want to hear about the politics of why my son and daughter-in-law are there!) but up until then, she had me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out how Alice became Fir ...more

An interesting story about an average midwestern girl who grows up to become a librarian and eventually the First Lady. (Side note...what would the husband of the first woman American president be called?) Enjoyed Sittenfeld's writing style, the characters were easy to relate to and although Alice Lindgren's life includes years in the political limelight, the story isn't focused on being political. Audio
I loved everything about this book. Another audio I wished that I had read-although the audio was excellent. Now I want to go grab the Laura Bush biography off my library's shelf and see how true to her real life this book actually was. This was my first Sittenfeld book but I will read more after this one! History, fiction based on fact...important topics, hard choices. Definitely a great book to discuss.

I finally have finished this book. It was too detailed & too long for me. I felt like the story could have been told in much shorter fashion. Of course, I say that about a lot of books (and movies too!).
