Although Henry McAllen planned to call his Mississippi farm Fair Fields, his wife Laura had a more appropriate name in mind: Mudbound. Great novel by first time novelist Hilary Jordan told from the POV of six characters living in rural post WWII Mississippi. The book made Jim Crow American come alive for me and made me really glad I had no real experience of this sort of subtle yet entrenched form of racism. Good companion book to The Help by Kathryn Stockett. The book club LOVED this one!

An engrossing tale about sacrifices of all types, of unsung heroes and the indignitites of the 1940s South. The characters were well-developed and it was a pleasure to pick this up each night. I stayed up way too late to get to the conclusion of the story.

Loved this book. Thought it was going to be a WW2 book, but it's more about social change set in rural Mississippi just after the war. It has sibling, parental, martial and racial issues all roled into this book. ...more

Engrossing and beautifully written, left me with book hangover. Very intense, complex characters, certainly makes you think.

This is the title I discussed today with the group at the library. There were 5 women there besides myself. I read this one on the Kindle (borrowed from OSL's e-zone!)Most of the group felt it was a page-turner, a book they wanted to keep reading. One woman felt that others have done the story better, or had a better voice. It feels odd to say that I liked this book because of it's subject matter: racism. But I am glad that I read this title and enjoyed discussing it at the library today. ...more
